Biogas Plant O&M: Operations Guide & Cost Management

Biogas plant profitability depends on consistent operations. Poor maintenance leads to digester failures, reduced gas yield, and costly downtime. Proactive O&M practices ensure reliable performance and extended asset life.

Daily Operations Checklist

Temperature monitoring: Maintain 35-40°C mesophilic range - Daily thermometer check at digester inlet and outlet - Thermal loss in winter requires enhanced insulation

Feedstock feeding: Consistent input schedule - Morning or evening feeding (avoid shock loading) - Record volume, type, and quality - Monitor for contamination (plastic, metals, stones)

Pressure monitoring: Maintain 20-50 mbar in digesters - Check pressure gauges hourly - Alert if pressure drops >10% or rises >50%

Gas quality: Measure methane %, H₂S concentration - Daily H₂S test (target <20 ppm) - Weekly GCV measurement - Monthly full gas analysis

Weekly Maintenance

Pump inspection: Check flow rates, alignment, bearing temperatures Valve function: Manually cycle isolation and relief valves Line pressure: Test all gas and liquid lines for leaks Separator performance: Remove accumulated condensate
